Anyone have tips for squeaky brakes? My wife has been complaining about noise so I pulled the pads on both ends but they are only half worn. Rotors look fine. I’m thinking a thorough brake clean and re-grease the pad backs. Other ideas?

WD40 on the rotors.

I use this spray on anti squeal, and it works for me.

That’s the stuff. Just apply liberally to the back of the pads and reinstall. Make sure you install the pads exactly the same way they came off, since they’re bedding to a specific set of grooves. Not a huge deal, just a recommendation.

I think Porsche’s solution is to post a passive aggressive video. You could try that, though I hear divorce is expensive...

Thanks. I’ve used that in the past when installing new pads but never tried it on partly worn ones.

Some of the squeaks are due to brake dust covers. I found that out after I put new brake discs on the back of my Legacy, but it turns out that in my manhandling of a very sticky brake I managed to bend one of the dust covers.

You can then weld the caliper to the rotor if you feel a reduction in braking capacity

Some swear that using the diff as a jack point is a horrible idea. But yours appears to have a solid mounting, as opposed to live axles like mine where you’d be stressing the axle tube welds.

Yeah I don’t think I would ever use the diff personally, first time I’ve ever seen that done.

Yeah using it with live axles seems like would be a pretty terrible idea. But a quick google search seems to show plenty of people doing it.

I use it Everytime I jack up my e30, although I use a hockey puck on the jack so I don’t damage the case.

Obviously it varies car to car but on modern Subaru’s the rear diff is the recommended jack point in both the owner’s manual and service manual.

Most cars with IRS recommend it. Usually the bottom of the diff has some reniforcement built into it.

Usually I use something - either a polyurethane pad or wood - but clearly I got a little lazy this time.
